Part 8—How I Build a Scene One Layer at a Time

When I began drawing Barnyard Adventures, I realized that explaining my process with photographs alone wasn't easy. I thought a short video might make it easier to understand how a Search For 10 scene is created.

The video below uses my completed Rainforest RoundUp artwork as an example, but it demonstrates the very same process I'm using to create Barnyard Adventures.

Transparent sheets of vellum allow me to build my drawings one layer at a time. Instead of erasing or redrawing the entire scene whenever I make a change, I can simply place another sheet over the previous one and continue refining the composition. This lets me experiment with ideas, make corrections, and gradually add more detail while preserving all of the work beneath.

Watching layers build one after another is much easier to understand than trying to describe the process with words alone.
