Part 21—FEEL the Landscape's Sun

Before I go any further, I thought I would give you a full view of the landscape, which is mostly completed.

I am trying hard to invoke a feeling of the warmth from the sun as it hits the objects in the landscape. You might remember the reference photo I showed you in Part 18 of the sun—that photo has really stayed with me as I’ve been painting this scene.

The background is finished for now so that I can move to the mid-ground—the horse barn. As you can see, I have only the first layer completed on the horse barn, and the white trim OBVIOUSLY still needs to be straightened out, etc., before the horses can be painted. The horses need to be completed before I can paint the fence in front of them.

I constantly need to be thinking about layers, from background to mid-ground to foreground.

Another tricky part was trying to slowly blend the dirt in front of the barn with the grass on the right side. I’m still working on that. “Layers” is the key word—it always takes awhile to get enough layers so it looks right.

Also, I am not happy with the meandering direction of my creek. There is plenty of time to change that, though!
